Day 12 – Marseille

Woke up a bit late, weather looked better with some blue sky. Didn’t leave the apartment until 11:00, headed to the old port via Starbucks. I forgot to mention earlier that there were a lot of dogs in Italy and France, and they are allowed in restaurants, cafes and on trains – yesterday we had to climb over a dog wandering up and down the train aisle, and there was a dog in the Starbucks today.

Had my coffee and pain au chocolate, then walked to the old port to get a bus to the top of the hill and the cathedral. There was a food market in the port, we had a little wander then got the packed bus to the Cathedral at the top of the hill. We actually paid for a ticket this time, unlike in Genoa.

The cathedral is high above the city and there were great views around, including of some small islands in the bay. It was quite warm, so stuffed the coats into the backpack. Took the lift up to the top of the church and took plenty of photos, then decided to walk back down to the port to get something to eat. I’m a bit over seafood, so hope to find a place that both Song and I can eat in. The walk took about 20 minutes and was easy, wouldn’t want to walk up though.

Got down to the old port and walked past the English pub, the Irish pub, McDonald’s and Subway looking for some French food. Plenty of places, we picked one just away from the seafront that did 3 courses for 26 Euro – there were a few of these around the square.

I had fish soup to start, Song had whitebait, then I had steak and chips (some real food for a change) and Song had a prawn risotto. The portions were generous for a set menu. I also had a beer. I had chocolate fondant for dessert, Song had tarte tartin. Cost 65 Euro ($112).

Went back to the hotel and dropped the bags, then popped out to a supermarket to get some fruit and stuff, it started to rain. Not long after we got back there was a thunderstorm and heavy rain, we’d already decided not to go out again so just as well. Watched the China F1 GP (go Piastri), then some other TV downloads.

We were thinking of doing a day trip to Avignon or Aix-en-Provence tomorrow but it would mean more time on trains and we’ve got 2 long train trips coming up, so tomorrow we’ll spend the day in Marseille again.
