Day 17 – San Sebastián

Got up late again, all the walking is taking its toll; when we’re not on a train or a bus we do about 18 to 20k steps a day. Left at 10:30 and walked to the Starbucks for my morning dishwater-like coffee. The weather was a bit cold, but sunny, and after a while we needed to take the coats off.

After the coffee we headed to a sculpture that featured on a lot of the fridge magnets so figured it was worth a visit, plus it was a pleasant walk along the beach and next to the funicular to the top of a hill for views over the bay. The wind picked up and even though it was sunny we needed the coats on again.

The bay is beautiful, a long curve of beach with houses on the hills looking down and a small island with a house on it. Song took about 3000 photos; one of the view, then one with me in it and then I took one of her in it so when we get divorced we won’t need to spend hours on photoshop editing the other one out.

It was a long walk, and several times we had to take the coats off only to put them back on again as the sun came in and out. We eventually got to the sculpture and took more photos despite 2 women sitting in front of it having a chat while loads of people took photos.

It was now getting cloudy and we decided not to go to the top, we had plenty of photos and it looked like it might rain so walked back for another 30 minutes to get some food at a couple of places we’d seen last night. We decided we’d not go mad and not order too much, so only ordered 11 pieces again and a beer for me – 33.80 Euro ($58). The locals apparently have a few pieces and a drink and then go to another and do the same, so that’s what we did, and walked 5 steps to the bar next door and ordered 6 more – $41. I know, but the food is sensational, so much choice and that’s what we came for. It was everything I expected and more. I said it’s just as well we don’t live here because we’d be eating out every day. Last night we rewatched the Travel Man show and they had a French toast and vanilla ice cream tapas which they raved about so naturally I had to go back to the place we went to yesterday and get it. Amazing.

Very happy and very full, we walked back to the hotel, hoping all the walking would help with all the eating. We decided we didn’t need dinner so just stayed in the room and watched downloads.

Tomorrow we go to France and start the loop back to Paris. And more food, because it’s France.
