Day 27 – Nantes to Rennes

Packed and ready to go, on our way to Rennes, a town in the North West of France in Brittany. Weather when we left was sunny and 8c, hopefully Rennes will be nice.

Picked up some rolls from Paul, then on the train. Rennes is only 100km from Nantes but the train doesn’t go direct and takes a couple of hours. In hindsight we might have been able to get a bus, but the train is better anyway and we’re not in a hurry.

The train passed through the French countryside, which was very green and dotted with old stone farmhouses and the occasional chateau, very pretty. I watched a movie for a bit and it wasn’t long before we arrived in Rennes.

Weather was still glorious, dropped the bags in the room and went out to see what was in Rennes.

Headed towards the market which had just reopened for the afternoon, only 5 minutes away but when we got there only a couple of stalls were open. We would come back tomorrow.

Walked towards the old centre, Song had booked another great place, not far from the station and in the middle of the town near all the attractions.

Spent the afternoon wandering around the town, checking into the sights I’d researched before. The old town was delightful – old buildings with exposed wood and some that were slightly leaning.

The town was pretty busy, with the typical squares lined with packed cafes and mostly young people drinking. The weather was perfect, around 22c, sunny and blue skies.

Managed to see most of the sights, the town centre was quite small. We decided to have an early dinner, a lot of the restaurants were shut till 19:00 and it was only 17:00, so I Googled and found one that was open, about a 15 minute walk away. Got there and it was closed. Damn you, Google.

Got on a bus back to the main square where we saw one that was open. Song had skate wing with potatoes and I had a burger, my first of the trip – by this time I’m usually about 5 burgers in. I also had a nice beer. Both meals were OK, a burger is a burger, and all in it cost 55 Euro. Not cheap, especially with the exchange rate thanks to Trump.

The hotel was just around the corner so walked back and watched some TV. Tomorrow we might go to Mont Saint Michel for half a day, depending on how we feel and how Song’s ankle is.
